Reflection

The beginning of my journey at the University of Florida began in the fall of 2020, I of course was excited and nervous. However, I, like everyone else, found myself navigating the unprecedented challenges posed by COVID. I am very grateful for the people I have surrounded myself with as they have been guiding me towards valuable programs such as the International Scholars Program (ISP), Heavener’s International Program: UF in London, as well as organizations like UF NaviGators International and UFL CHAARG. Through the combination of campus involvement, academic coursework, and international experiences, I have developed many skills that would allow me to understand and effectively communicate with individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

In the summer of 2023, I had the chance to participate in one of the most immersive and enriching experiences of my life by studying abroad in London. The British Life and Business course offered a comprehensive examination of British life and multiculturalism through a business lens. Similarly, the International Trade course provided insights into the nature of international trade and its impact on global economies, with a focus on the role of London as an international financial center. My internship with Nylon Pie as a commercial assistant provided hands-on experience in scouting out commercial sites, event management and venue operations. This experience honed my problem-solving abilities and communication skills as I collaborated with diverse teams and engaged with clients from various backgrounds.

Apart from academics and the internship, London itself stands out as a unique destination and has quickly become one of my favorite places I have ever visited. I loved using the Tube as my primary transportation system. Using the Tube everyday sharpened my navigation skills and adaptability, while also fostering a greater appreciation for sustainable transportation practices. Attending events like Wimbledon and the Trooping the Colour parade further immersed me in British culture and traditions, enhancing my cultural awareness and intercultural competence. Other events like the Capital Summertime Ball and British Summer Time Hyde Park immersed me in the local crowd and introduced me to an experience I have not had in the United States. As result of living in London for three months, I have developed a greater knowledge about the British culture and social norms.

As the president of UFL CHAARG, a women’s health and fitness organization, I have strengthened my organizational skills through event planning, member coordination, and administrative task delegation. Being part of a student organization with over 100 members has granted me the opportunity to connect and collaborate with women from diverse cultures and backgrounds. This experience, along with my role in game day operations at the Florida Gator athletic facilities, help me develop efficient and effective coordination skills in managing resources and executing events.

My mentorship role in UF NaviGators International led me to meet international students from the United Kingdom and Australia and allowed me to learn about the challenges and experiences that they face. I am grateful to have been able to offer advice and guidance to both of my mentees and to share my enthusiasm for the University of Florida with them. One of my favorite memories from this organization is the New Orleans trip that they organized. It was a three-day trip where our group was exposed to the city’s rich history, cuisine, and music. I explored the French Quarter, enjoyed a jazz bar, and sampled local dishes like gumbo and jambalaya. This organization has excelled in showcasing the unique aspects of Gainesville like the bat houses and Paynes Prairie and has offered numerous opportunities for mentors and mentees to mutually learn and grow from each other. Being a part of this organization has signified the importance of support and inclusivity in fostering a positive environment for international students.

Overall, my engagement with global learning at the University of Florida has significantly influenced my global awareness and perspective. Through a combination of academic coursework, international experiences, and campus involvement, I have grown my sense of confidence when meeting new people as well as my ability to be more flexible and open minded. I have developed critical thinking skills, learned effective communication strategies, and gained a deeper understanding of global interdependencies and cultural diversity. These skills and perspectives that I have gained will continue to guide me as I embark on my personal and professional journey beyond the University of Florida.
